In 2016 my Mexican-born husband and I (US-born) were lying in bed discussing a problematic situation that had just arisen. I, a native English speaker, said “we’re in a pickle” to which my husband, an English-as-a-second-language speaker, proceeded to visualize the two of us trapped inside a giant pickle. We got a good laugh out of the situation but quickly realized that “language is weird,” especially when it comes to idioms.
After years of marriage, blending families, and teaching our kids multiple languages, we’ve found “language is weird” to be true across the board, especially after realizing how often we say these nonsensical phrases.
That is how Verbatim was born. The idea of calling attention to the beautifully crazy and bazar thing that is language. A way to highlight and make light of everyday sayings.
The sayings we select to print make us laugh and hopefully you’ll get a little chuckle out of them as well.
Oh! One last thing, something might appear offensive in your language, but please remember that these are harmless wordplays and not at all intended to be hurtful. After all, laughter is the best medicine!
BTW - we’re tinkled pink you made it this far! Congrats
